EAST CITY ART REVIEWS: WE THE PEOPLE, FOR SHOW OR FOR SURE: CHAWKY FRENN 2010-2020

The Delaware Contemporary Art Museum is currently displaying a unique exhibit by Virginia-based artist Chawky Frenn. The exhibition includes forty-seven mixed media paintings created on posters of the United States Constitution. Each painting is accompanied by a text selected by the artist, featuring quotes from various political and religious leaders, including past presidents, economists, civil rights activists, and more.

The series began as a response to the Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling, which allowed for large amounts of corporate money to influence elections. Over the past decade, Frenn expanded his focus to encompass a range of issues related to democracy and human rights in the United States. The artist, who witnessed the civil war in Lebanon before moving to the U.S., draws on his personal experiences to address societal issues.

The exhibit is organized into thematic groups covering topics such as justice, Native American and African American rights, women's rights, immigrants' rights, Citizens United, endless war, LGBTQ issues, the environment, and the impact of money on politics. Frenn's artwork often portrays powerful and emotional scenes, evoking the styles of the Spanish Baroque and Surrealism, as well as the works of artists like Goya and Siquieros.

The paintings make visual and textual references to art history and iconic images, further encouraging viewers to engage with the complex issues explored in the exhibit. In addition to the Constitution posters, there is also an oil painting titled "Truth" that symbolizes the sacrifices made by soldiers in seemingly endless wars.

This exhibition offers a thought-provoking and emotionally charged exploration of contemporary societal and political issues, making it a compelling and impactful display for visitors.
